“Being a woman is not a means to humiliate and punish anyone”
After a policeman in the Iranian Kurdish town of Marivan paraded an accused criminal in traditional Kurdish women’s clothes in the streets in order to humiliate him, women marched in the city condemning the use of women’s attire as a kind of humiliation.
In support, an internet campaign of Kurdish and other Iranian men has sprung up showing men wearing Kurdish women’s clothes and messages and support. For example, this message says,”wearing Kurdish women’s clothes is not only not an insult, it is instead a great honor for us,” and goes on to describe how women stand side by side with men in every part of society and during wartime.

WOW

Haha! This is great! I love how serious everyone’s faces are. Respect and equality for women is still such a long way off in not just these parts of the world, but here in the U.S. It’s really uplifting to see these men stand up for what they believe is right.

The Spirit Of The Boston Marathon Will Never Be The Same →

This column written by a Boston University grad exactly expresses the sentiments I tried to explain to my coworkers today about why the attack at the Boston Marathon was so especially tragic—because of the spirit, celebration, comraderie, and good-natured fun that the Boston Marathon (and Marathon Monday and Patriot’s Day) symbolized. It breaks my heart that this day will forever be stamped with this horrific memory, and it saddens and angers me that the hateful intention behind the attacks are able to ruin such a purely joyous and wonderful occasion. The fact that they decided to attack the city and its people on THIS of all days, and at the FINISH LINE, among the triumphant runners and proud friends, families, and enthusiastic spectators is enough to bring me to tears. Boston will soldier on, but Marathon Monday has lost a little of its magic today.

quote

Boston. Fucking horrible.

I remember, when 9/11 went down, my reaction was, “Well, I’ve had it with humanity.”

But I was wrong. I don’t know what’s going to be revealed to be behind all of this mayhem. One human insect or a poisonous mass of broken sociopaths.

But here’s what I DO know. If it’s one person or a HUNDRED people, that number is not even a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a percent of the population on this planet. You watch the videos of the carnage and there are people running TOWARDS the destruction to help out. (Thanks FAKE Gallery founder and owner Paul Kozlowski for pointing this out to me). This is a giant planet and we’re lucky to live on it but there are prices and penalties incurred for the daily miracle of existence. One of them is, every once in awhile, the wiring of a tiny sliver of the species gets snarled and they’re pointed towards darkness.

But the vast majority stands against that darkness and, like white blood cells attacking a virus, they dilute and weaken and eventually wash away the evil doers and, more importantly, the damage they wreak. This is beyond religion or creed or nation. We would not be here if humanity were inherently evil. We’d have eaten ourselves alive long ago.

So when you spot violence, or bigotry, or intolerance or fear or just garden-variety misogyny, hatred or ignorance, just look it in the eye and think, “The good outnumber you, and we always will.”

This is great journalism that everyone should watch. New details about the Sandy Hook massacre make an even stronger case for the need to create stricter laws on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.

quote …how vividly it illustrates a critical insight about persistence: that in the first weeks or years of any worthwhile project, feedback – whether from your own emotions, or from other people – isn’t a reliable indication of how you’re doing.

An interesting, quick little read about how the secret to a creatively fulfilling career lies in perseverance, and paying heed to the idea that you have to be doing the best, most creative work right out of the gate.

Pretty Cute Watching Boston Residents Play Daily Game Of ‘Big City’ →

Sources went on to call the city’s darling nickname, “The Hub,” a great, hilarious touch, as though Boston were an actual locus of anything vital whatsoever.”

Hilarious Onion article about Boston. Very much put into perspective by living in New York City.

hypervocal:

Serving Breakfast, Lunch And Hugs. Despite having Down syndrome, Tim Harris always wanted to own a restaurant. Now, the Special Olympics athlete is believed to be the only person in the country with his condition that owns a restaurant, which is aptly called Tim’s Place. [Watch a short video about his story]

This is so inspiring. This guy has accomplished more in his life than many people can say. This reminds me of a quotation I saw somewhere (which I now can’t find, so I’m going to paraphrase): “It’s not your disabilities that define you as disabled, it’s your abilities that make you able.”
